The debate over extending jobless benefits to the millions of unemployed, many of whom count this as their only financial lifeline,  has really heated up over the weekend.

It looks like Congress will spend another $34 billion to extend these benefits for the millions who have exhausted nearly two years of unemployment insurance, that is, as soon as they seat a replacement for the late Sen. Robert Byrd of Tennessee West Virginia.
